چکیده

Objective: Blepharospasm (BSP) is a disease in which the closure rate of bilateral eyelids increases, mainly due to involuntary contraction orbicularis oculi, procerus, and corrugator muscles. The objective this study was report postoperative outcomes after deep brain stimulation (DBS) 10 cases pure BSP at least 12 months follow-up.Methods: Ten patients with who underwent globus pallidus interna (GPi) DBS Catholic University Korea, Incheon St. Mary’s Hospital, between 2019 2021 were included. Burke-Fahn-Marsden dystonia rating scale (BFMDRS), Disability Index, Jankovic Rating Scale used for analysis before surgery, 6 follow-up as short-term outcomes, over 1 year (12–37 months) long-term results. Results: median age surgery 56.5 years (interquartile range [IQR], 50.5–65.8 years) length time from onset 58.0 (IQR, 46.8–64.3 months). period 22.5 15.3–29.0 BFMDRS movement subscale scores three points (preoperative baseline, months, follow-up) 7.0 6.0–8.0), 4.5 3.9–6.0; 35.7% improvement, p<0.001), 3.8 2.8–5.3; 45.7% p=0.002), respectively. Conclusion: Bilateral GPi can be effective if conservative treatment options fail. Its benefit not only observed short term, but also maintained during follow-up.

Intractable Blepharospasm Treated with Bilateral Pallidal Deep Brain Stimulation

BACKGROUND Blepharospasm can be present as an isolated dystonia or in conjunction with other forms of cranial dystonia, causing significant disability. CASE REPORT We report a case of a 69-year-old male with craniocervical dystonia, manifesting primarily as incapacitating blepharospasm refractory to medical treatments. He underwent bilateral globus pallidus (GP) deep brain stimulation (DBS) w...

Both thalamic and pallidal deep brain stimulation for myoclonic dystonia.

Myoclonic dystonia is poorly managed with medication and may be severe enough to warrant surgical intervention. Surgery has targeted either the globus pallidus pars interna (GPi) or the thalamus, but there is no accepted target for this condition. The authors present the case of a 23-year-old man treated with unilateral deep brain stimulation in both the thalamus and GPi. His movement disorder ...

Deep Brain Stimulation for treating Tourette Syndrome

In recent months, there has been substantial publicity about the possibility of treating tics in Tourette Syndrome (TS) with deep brain stimulation (DBS). This publicity has resulted in increased interest among individuals TS and their families. Very little is known about the use of DBS for treating other movement disorders such as Parkinson disease, essential tremor, and dystonia. Below are so...

Pallidal Deep Brain Stimulation in the Treatment of Huntington’s Chorea

Despite the success of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in various movement disorders, its use in Huntington ́s Disease (HD) has been limited. So far, promising results of pallidal DBS have been reported in 7 patients with HD. We performed bilateral pallidal DBS in a 59 year old woman with HD since 12 years and severe motor symptoms. At the evaluation after 12 months the effect was deemed satisfacto...

Pallidal vs subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation in Parkinson disease.

BACKGROUND Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the globus pallidus interna (GPi) and subthalamic nucleus (STN) has been reported to relieve motor symptoms and levodopa-induced dyskinesia in patients with advanced Parkinson disease (PD). Although it has been suggested that stimulation of the STN may be superior to stimulation of the GPi, comparative trials are limited. OBJECTIVE To extend our rand...
